Why can't I read chile.science on the Web?
When Mosaic tries to read chile.science, it goes to your local news
server to get the messages. If chile.science is not carried at
your local server, then you get an error message. The best way
to get around this would be for us to specify that your Mosaic client
come to
our news server to get the messages. (Although this might produce a
slow link, it would always work.) However, according to the following
explanation (which was stolen from
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/demoweb/url-primer.html) :
Currently, network clients like NCSA
Mosaic don't allow you to specify a news server like you would
normally expect (e.g.,
news://news.yoyodyne.com/rec.gardening); this may be
coming down the road but in the meantime you will have to specify your
news server via some other method. The most common method is to
set the environment variable NNTPSERVER to the name of
your news server before you start Mosaic.
This sounds like a great idea, but so far, nobody has been able to get
it to work. If you are lucky enough or brilliant enough to figure out
how to make it work, tell us,
so I can make the details available to everyone.
The University of Chile's NNTP server is called uchdcc.dcc.uchile.cl.
In the meantime, you might want to find out details about how to
read the newsgroup via mailing list.
